Gigantic Japanese Spider Crab – Fuel for Your Nightmares

Let’s start off by saying that Japanese Spider Crabs can have a leg span of up to 12 feet from claw to claw. We repeat: a spider-looking animal that can cover TWELVE FEET of space at once. Though it may be delicious, the Japanese Spider Crab is no doubt unnervingly large (and beyond terrifying to most people).

Especially when you consider that a standard “jumbo” Blue Crab (a common type that people eat in various food dishes) has a shell that measures 6.5-7 inches and a Japanese Spider Crab has a shell that measures around 16 inches, the Spider Crabs are clearly the Godzillas of the anthropod world.

Found mainly in Saruga Bay, off the coast of Japan, these gargantuan creatures can live in waters as close as 50 ft. deep and as far as 2,000 ft. deep. Catching one of them is considered a great accomplishment, and these animals are more often used for research and exhibit than for food.

Maybe it’s just us, but we certainly wouldn’t want to get up close and personal with one of these huge creatures. See more about the Japanese Spider Crab below (and prepare for some new nightmares).
