A lot of components of Japanese culture are a far cry from what most Americans are used to. Take the uber-popular “cuddle cafes” for example, where men can pay to sleep next to a woman and cuddle (but no sexual favors are allowed).
There is also the intensive, 11-year process of learning how to cook fugu, a poisonous blowfish delicacy. One of the final tests for a Japanese chef-in-training is for him to eat his own preparation of the fugu before he can work in a restaurant. The consequence of cooking the fish improperly? Death. And if poisonous fish aren’t your cup of tea, you could also try basashi, or raw horse meat (another delicacy).
It is also common for Japanese families to adopt fully-grown, adult males as heirs to inherit businesses if they don’t already have sons. And while these and many other customs in Japan take things to extremes, their commercials, games, pranks and entertainment are also no exception.
