Woman Freezes Herself to Death in Cryotherapy Machine

Spas Are Now Offering Extremely Low Temperatures as Beauty Treatments, Called Cryotherapy

Calling it, “A Modern Approach to Healing,” some spas around the country are offering dangerously low temperatures in the application of medical therapy. Cryotherapy has become a popular trend in niche-spa-treatment by offering a rejuvenating, hyper-cooling process that lowers a person’s skin temperature to approximately 32 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of up to 2 ½ minutes. This polar freezing experience is achieved by enveloping the body with extremely cold air at temperatures ranging from -200 to -270 degrees Fahrenheit.

Nike, Dr. Oz, The Doctors TV show, the Phoenix Suns – all are big fans of cryotherapy; but the skyrocketing fame of this niche-treatment may soon come to a bone-chilling halt.

CUFBI recently learned that a 24-year-old aesthetician who managed a spa in Las Vegas, Chelsea Ake-Salvacion, was found dead inside one of the metal chambers used for the extremely cold treatment, as reported by the Washington Post. Ake-Salvacion was alone at Rejuvenice, the medical spa that she managed, when she decided to treat herself with cryotherapy. Results from the autopsy are still pending, but medical professionals suggest she froze to death within seconds after she was trapped inside surrounded by sub-zero polar conditions for 10 hours and most likely suffocated.

Cryotherapy is not approved by the FDA to address any condition or disease, however celebrities, spas and medical folks are claiming it smooths wrinkles, reduces inflammation, and boosts the immune system. Investigators have initially ruled her death a result of operator error, but her relatives emphatically deny that assertion.

Cryotherapy session packages run anywhere from an introductory session at $40 up to 12 sessions for about $480 and higher.
